Ministry's Responsibilities

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is committed to performing its tasks and duties in accordance with the principles stipulated in the Basic Statute of the State. Some of the key principles of Oman's foreign policy reflect His Majesty Sultan Qaboos' values and vision for Oman's role in the international arena are as follows :

Maintaining independence and sovereignty
Preserving the national unity
Consolidating cooperative relations
Striving towards continued friendship with all nations on the basis of mutual respect and common interest
Guaranteeing non-interference in the internal affairs of other states
Insuring international and regional agreements treaties compliance
Observing recognized international laws
Supporting policies and initiatives that will lead to peace, security and stability between nations and states.

The Foreign Ministry is the official Government channel for external communication. The Ministry is responsible for the day-to-day management of international affairs and foreign policy challenges. The Ministry's responsibilities include the following :

Promoting the Sultanate's political, economic, cultural and scientific interest regionally and globally
Widening and strengthening friendly relations between the Sultanate and other states
Establishing diplomatic relations with other countries and setting up diplomatic missions to project, defend and promote the Sultanate's interests .
Coordinating with other ministries and concerned organizations to explore economic and commercial opportunities between the Sultanate and other states.
Looking after Omani nationals overseas.
Participating in the preparation of bilateral and multilateral joint commissions and meetings.
Attending meetings domestically, regionally and internationally that involve the Sultanate and other partners signing agreements that fall within the Ministry's sphere of authority.
Providing information to and coordinating with other ministries and competent organizations on matters that require clarification on the Sultanate's position in relation to issues that fall under the responsibility of the Ministry.
Monitoring regional and international political events and developments and subsequently preparing analyses and assessments that serve the Sultanate's overall interest.
Cooperating and coordinating with other ministries and other relevant organizations in promoting investment opportunities in the Sultanate.
Encouraging partnerships between the Sultanate and other states and organizations in the commercial, educational cultural and scientific fields.
Promoting dialogue between states and resolving conflicts in a peaceful way. The realization of peace between countries creates opportunities for cooperation in sustainable development programme .
Taking the necessary measures in assisting in the issuance of royal decrees in the signing or ratification of international agreements following Cabinet approval.
Issuing letters of credentials for the Sultanate's official delegation attending UN-related meetings abroad.
Supervising and managing the Sultanate's diplomatic missions overseas.
issuing diplomatic and service passports in accordance with the prevailing rules and provisions.
Overseeing and managing the Omani Diplomatic Institute and preparing its academic and scientific programme to develop and enhance the skills of the Ministry's professional officers and diplomats.
Running and managing the Omani Diplomatic Club in accordance with the terms and conditions laid down by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Overseeing accredited foreign diplomatic missions in the Sultanate and coordinating with the concerned authorities in facilitating the foreign missions' assignments.
